Parenting Coordination"My ex and I could not agree on anything and we were constantly in court. My lawyer suggested we retain a parent coordinator for when we disagree. Now my ex and I agree that it has made things much better "What is a Parenting Coordinator?A Parenting Coordinator assists high conflict parents to implement and follow through with their parenting plan with a goal to reduce parental conflict. The Parenting Coordinator (PC) works with the parents to facilitate resolution to parenting disputes as they arise. Where no agreement is reached, the Parenting Coordinator may either make a recommendation as to how the dispute should be resolved or make an arbitration decision as is contracted at the outset with the family. The Parenting Coordinator cannot change the terms of the existing court order or domestic agreement. In most cases the parents contract with the Parenting Coordinator for a period of one year. What are the benefits of being Involved in Parenting Coordination?While the parents are involved in a Parenting Coordination process, the Parenting Coordinator monitors the parenting plan and assists the parents in effectively addressing any parenting issues that arise. The Parenting Coordinator may educate the parents regarding the harmful effects of high conflict on family members during the separation and assist them in improving their communication and problem-solving abilities so that future disagreements may be resolved with increased independence. What are the fees involved in Parenting Coordination?A retainer is requested prior to beginning the Parenting Coordination process. Unless agreed upon otherwise, the parties share the cost of this service equally. The hourly rate charged by the Mediation Centre is $200. Additional retainers may be requested as the funds are depleted. Should the Parenting Coordinator be required to give evidence in court the court attendance fees are $800 per half day at court plus preparation time at $200 per hour. The
